In view of the H1N1 situation and the growing number of H1n1 cases in Singapore, should you not feel well ( have any flu-like symptoms), please refrain from close contact with others, and do not come to school. If you feel that missing classes is a concern for you, I would be glad to hold extra classes so that you can catch up on work. Kindly pass the message around to your classmates.

Scene

The scene opens with a patient lying on the hospital bed with his friend beside him. The Friend reassures the patient (by placing one hand on the patient’s shoulder) while the patient cringed, seemingly in pain and discomfort.

Scene

A doctor and nurse are having a conversation outside the hospital ward.

Nurse: Doctor, how is the patient? He looks like he is in great discomfort.
Doctor: Yes, he is in great discomfort. He is suffering from liver failure. The only way he can pull through is getting a liver transplant.
Nurse: But Doctor, we don’t have any suitable liver for the transplant, do we?
Doctor: Actually, we do have one that is suitable, but the patient has refused it.

(The doctor shakes his head, and signs heavily).

Scene: In the hospital room.

Friend: How are you feeling?
Patient: Terrible. I think I may not make it.
Doctor comes in with the nurse.
Doctor: Patient, we can do a liver transplant for you with a 70% chance of a full recovery. Do you want to…..
Patient: NO! I already said no! I cannot bring myself to accept a liver from another person who is of THAT race. I cannot imagine that. I have never liked people of THAT race before in my entire life, and will never will (Breaks into a heavy cough).
Doctor: Patient, there is no other way out for you. This is your best chance. Friend, try to talk him round.
Friend: Hey, I have been your friend for so long, and I think that you are very prejudiced against people of that race. I don understand why you don’t like them.
Patient: You don. If I accept the transplant, will I be like them? Oh no!
Fate is playing a trick on me now.
Friend: We should not be looking at people through tinted glasses. Every race is the same. We should be open to them. Get rid of your prejudice.
Nurse: Patient, come on, this is your only chance of survival.
Patient: I don’t know. Life is making a mockery of me now (Starts to cough again). What should I do?

Scene fades out slowly…

Phrase to be flashed on the screen:

“Anyone can be our neighbour, a friend in need, regardless of race or religion.
Don’t wait, blur those lines now.”

The screen blurs away.
